DAY by DAY ITINERARY

Arrival Day & Day 1: Kigali

Arrive in Kigali, where private transport will escort you to the five star Kigali Serena Hotel. Settle in and enjoy a restful evening, allowing time to unwind after international travel and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 2: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Set among steep valleys and forested ridgelines, Kigali is a dynamic and forward looking city, rich with creative energy and cultural depth. After breakfast, we explore the city on a guided tour, offering insight into both its vibrant present and its complex past.

A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial provides a profoundly moving and essential understanding of Rwanda’s history. Through thoughtfully curated exhibitions and personal testimonies, the memorial honors the lives lost in the 1994 genocide and reflects the extraordinary resilience and reconciliation that define modern Rwanda.

In the afternoon, we depart Kigali on a scenic drive of approximately two and a half hours, passing rolling coffee plantations and rural villages as we ascend into the misty foothills of the Virunga Mountains. By late afternoon, we arrive at the intimate Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, located just minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. After settling in, we gather for dinner and an early night, ready for our first gorilla trek the following morning.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s most spellbinding landscapes unfold within Volcanoes National Park, where the emerald slopes of the Virunga volcanoes rise into mist-laced skies and ancient forests echo with birdsong. This iconic wilderness is one of Africa’s most important conservation strongholds, home to golden monkeys and nearly half of the world’s remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas.

After an early breakfast, we depart for the park headquarters for a detailed briefing before meeting our expert guides and porters. This is the same region where Dian Fossey carried out her groundbreaking research, and today several habituated gorilla families thrive here under careful protection. During the orientation, we gain insight into how responsible gorilla trekking supports conservation efforts and surrounding communities.

Our trek then begins, ascending through lush, high-altitude forest in search of a specific gorilla family. Trek durations vary, ranging from approximately 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ movements, with a steady and manageable pace throughout. Skilled trackers are already positioned on the mountain and communicate with our guides to help locate the family.

Once found, we step quietly off the trail for an unforgettable encounter. For one precious hour, the maximum time permitted, we observe the gorillas in their natural habitat, witnessing moments of play, rest, and connection while photographing from a respectful distance. It is an experience that is at once humbling, emotional, and deeply moving.

In the afternoon, guests may choose to visit the Dian Fossey Campus for a deeper look into her enduring legacy and the ongoing conservation work inspired by her pioneering efforts.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park to Kigali

This morning, we return to Volcanoes National Park for a second gorilla trek, visiting a different family and offering a fresh perspective on these remarkable primates. While trekking times may vary, the structure of the day follows the same thoughtful and well-supported process, guided by experienced trackers and rangers.

After returning to the lodge, we gather for lunch and time to reflect before packing up and transferring to the airport for onward flights, carrying with us memories of one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth.
