NAMIBIA: a DESERT of WONDERS
This journey offers a rare blend of remote exploration and authentic cultural connection in one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries. We’ll explore the Hoanib Valley in search of desert adapted elephants, spend time with the Himba people, one of Africa’s most isolated communities, and conclude with the extraordinary opportunity to walk on foot with rhinos in Ongava, a leading conservation reserve bordering Etosha National Park.
Beyond a traditional safari, this journey is shaped by Namibia’s wide open landscapes, where cultural encounters feel deeply personal and wildlife experiences unfold in unexpected and unforgettable ways. Guided by Drew Doggett, this journey reflects his thoughtful approach to travel and his belief in the transformative power of experiencing wild places with intention.
YOUR JOURNEY at a GLANCE
SEAMLESS and EXTRAORDINARY”
WHERE you’ll STAY
Accessible only by plane, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp lies deep within Namibia’s remote Kaokoveld Desert, a land of striking contrasts where rust-colored mountains, vast plains, and the Atlantic coastline meet. This dramatic region offers a profound sense of scale and isolation. Days are spent exploring in search of desert-adapted wildlife, hiking dunes, and visiting the haunting Skeleton Coast, before returning to dine beneath star-filled skies. Set above a valley near the Hoanib River, the camp overlooks a waterhole visited by lions, elephants, giraffes, and brown hyena. With just eight solar-powered canvas suites, the camp blends understated luxury with its surroundings, offering an intimate, immersive experience in one of Namibia’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
Retreat to Namibia’s remote northwest at Serra Cafema, one of the world’s most secluded safari destinations. Set in Hartmann’s Valley along the Kunene River, this extraordinary landscape contrasts lush riverbanks with vast desert, creating a rare sense of quiet wonder. Desert-adapted wildlife thrives here, from oryx and zebra to crocodiles, while the Himba people maintain their centuries-old traditions. The lodge features just eight suites of wood, canvas, and thatch, designed with subtle Himba influence and set beneath open skies. Days unfold slowly with quad biking, guided walks, or seasonal boat trips, while a riverside pool offers respite from the heat. Here, adventure, culture, and stillness come together in a deeply restorative setting.
Set along a rocky ridge in the dolomite hills of Ondundozonanandana- “the mountain where the boy took the calves”- Ongava Lodge blends natural beauty with local legend. Fourteen stone-and-thatch chalets are thoughtfully positioned to merge with the surrounding wilderness. At the heart of the lodge, a dining area opens onto twin viewing decks and a pool overlooking a permanent waterhole, where rhinos and other wildlife gather. A nearby game viewing hide offers excellent opportunities for quiet observation and photography. Days unfold at a relaxed pace, with wildlife often visible from your chalet. Ongava Lodge offers a front-row seat to the rhythms of the bush, combining comfort, conservation, and a deep connection to the land.
DAY by DAY ITINERARY
Arrive in Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek, where you’ll settle in and enjoy a restful evening before the journey into the wilderness begins. This first night allows time to regroup, adjust to the rhythm of travel, and prepare for the remarkable landscapes and experiences that lie ahead.
Our journey begins in spectacular fashion as we fly into the remote Hoanib Valley, an otherworldly introduction to Namibia’s vast and dramatic desert landscapes. This region feels almost untouched, defined by sculpted terrain, immense scale, and wildlife uniquely adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
Based at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, we’ll explore surreal desert valleys and ephemeral riverbeds in search of desert adapted lions, Hartmann’s zebra, oryx, giraffe, springbok, and the elusive brown hyena. Along the coast, we may encounter Cape fur seal colonies and witness the stark beauty of the Atlantic meeting the desert sands. Interacting with this landscape feels like stepping into another world, where silence, space, and light define each day.
One day includes an unforgettable overland journey to the Skeleton Coast, with lunch enjoyed on the beach beside the roaring Atlantic. We return by scenic flight, offering a striking aerial perspective of this mesmerizing and deeply evocative region. Expect rare photographic opportunities and a profound sense of isolation in a landscape that feels both ancient and dreamlike.
From the Hoanib, we journey north to Serra Cafema, one of Africa’s most remote safari lodges, set along the tranquil banks of the Kunene River in Namibia’s far northwest. This isolated outpost lies where vast desert plains, sculpted geological formations, and life-giving water converge, creating a landscape of remarkable contrast and beauty.
Experiences here unfold at a thoughtful pace and may include dune sensitive quad biking, guided nature drives, walks among striking rock formations, and seasonal boat excursions along the Kunene River. Time spent with the Himba people, a semi-nomadic community who have lived in harmony with this land for centuries, offers a rare and meaningful cultural connection. These interactions, along with any photographic opportunities, are developed collaboratively with local hosts and conducted with care, respect, and reciprocity, ensuring an experience that is both authentic and deeply enriching.
Together, these days offer a profound immersion shaped equally by Namibia’s extraordinary landscapes and the enduring cultural traditions rooted within them.
Our final chapter brings us to Ongava Private Game Reserve, a richly rehabilitated wilderness sharing an unfenced boundary with Etosha National Park. This unique location allows wildlife to move freely between protected areas, creating exceptional viewing opportunities across diverse habitats.
Here, we’ll enjoy a blend of classic game drives within Ongava and excursions into Etosha, where expansive salt pans and open plains draw an abundance of wildlife. Species commonly encountered include lion, elephant, black and white rhino, leopard, zebra, springbok, and Namibia’s iconic oryx antelope.
For those who wish, there is the option to join an expertly guided rhino tracking experience on foot, offering rare insight into conservation efforts and an intimate connection with these remarkable animals. We’ll also visit Ongava’s acclaimed Research Centre to gain a behind the scenes understanding of the scientific work supporting wildlife protection in the region.
As evening falls, night safaris reveal a different side of the bush, when nocturnal species emerge and predators become active. With abundant birdlife, roaming elephant herds, and frequent big cat sightings, Ongava provides a fitting and memorable conclusion to our Namibian journey.
On the final morning, we’ll enjoy one last game drive before transferring to Windhoek for onward travel via Cape Town or Johannesburg. Depart with lasting memories of Namibia’s vast landscapes, rich cultures, and extraordinary wildlife.
With Drew as your host, get ready to experience the beauty, joy, and wonder of our big, beautiful world.
